Color Guard

Guard Sponsor: Ann Kinard (DMS teacher)

Guard Instructor: Yunona Shkolnikov

We offer a FALL COLOR GUARD program (for students with no guard experience, all the way up to multiple years of experience). This group of students will learn the basics and put together a quick routine to be performed a time or two throughout the community.

We also train and prepare the guard students for spring guard tryouts. Most of our students who do spring guard participate in the Bob Jones Junior Varsity Color Guard team! These tryouts are in late November.

Fall Color Guard

Fall Color Guard at DMS is sponsored by Mrs. Jenney Merritt (band director at DMS). We hire a guard choreographer and instructor each year with the fee funds.

Tryouts: August 2021 — Meet in Discovery band room — Exact dates TBD

Practice Schedule: After school from 3:30-5:30 – Tuesdays and Thursdays

Fees: Depends on total number of students selected. Fees have ranged from $55 – $80 total in years past.

Discovery will provide a flag for each student for the fall season that students will check out. Students who have purchased their own are allowed to use them at practice, but not at performances.

Fall Guard will perform during the fall season at at least 1 home DMS football game and any other community performances we can acquire. In the past, we have performed at March On Madison, the Madison Street Festival Parade, the DMS vs. LMS game, pep rallies and other community events.

Spring Color Guard

The Discovery guard students who tryout and are accepted will join with Bob Jones freshmen on the Bob Jones JV Winterguard team.

There are tryouts required for this team – tryouts are usually in November of the previous semester and practices start in December or January.

Students will compete at SCGC (Southeastern Color Guard Circuit) events all over the southeast. They will travel with the BJHS Varsity Winterguard and sometimes the BJHS Indoor Drumline.

Fees will be higher than fall guard for this group because of competition and travel expenses, along with more uniform requirements, etc.
